The fame of Father Giambattista Martini is largely due to the activity as a historiographer, theoretician and teacher of music unceasingly carried out by him in the Bolognese convent of S. Francesco: his monumental Storia della musica, the first history of music ever written in Italian and published in Italy, was hailed by the most distinguished personalities of that period, who unanimously praised his deep erudition; and a great number of young composers and musicographers from all over Europe, wishing to learn the secrets of this art, stopped in Bologna to receive a training or perfect their knowledge under his guidance. A less celebrated activity of Martini's was that as a composer, which he carried out continuously as maestro di cappella in the Basilica next to the Bolognese convent, from 1725 to the time of his death. The pieces presented in this cd relate a little-known episode in Martini's life, an episode that shows how highly he was appreciated also as a composer. Alessandro Quarta, leading the Concerto Romano and the vocal ensemble Ecclesia Nova, is the protagonist of this precious world premiere recording, a live production by Tactus of the concert held in Bologna at the Basilica of San Francesco on 21st of April 2023.

musikalischer Leiter und Gründer des renommierten Vokal- und Instrumentalensembles Concerto Romano, hat sich der Wiederentdeckung römischer und italienischer Musik des 16., 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts verschrieben. Regelmäßig leitet er sein Ensemble auf Konzerttourneen durch Europa oder in die USA und erntet zeitgleich hervorragende Kritiken und Auszeichnungen für gemeinsame Aufnahmen wie 2015 den "Prix Caecilia" für die CD “Sacred music for the poor” und 2016 den "Diapason d’or" für “La sete di Christo” von Bernardo Pasquini. Künstlerische Zusammenarbeiten und Kooperationen verbinden ihn mit dem Ensemble Emelthée aus Lyon, dem Boston Early Music Festival Ensemble, dem Ensemble Blue Heron in Boston sowie dem Consortium des Carissimi Ensembles in Minneapolis für die moderne Erstaufführung der Oper "Tirinto" von Bernardo Pasquini.
Gastdirigate führen ihn aktuell zum Orchestra barocca nazionale dei Conservatori, ans Theater Kiel, ans Teatro Comunale Claudio Abbado di Ferrara und zum Reate Festival, wo er bereits mit Monteverdis "Ritorno di Ulisse sowie Melanis "L'empio Punito" aufführen konnte. An der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, der Hochschule für Künste Bremen, der Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado in Mailand u.a. unterrichtet er regelmäßig. Seit 2019 ist er Dozent am Conservatorio E. F. Dall’Abaco in Verona. Seit 2007 bereits unterrichtet er an der Fondazione Italiana Per la Musica Antica, seit 2018 ist er künstlerischer Leiter des internationalen FIMA-Festivals für Alte Musik in Urbino.
