Mieczyslaw Weinberg konnte sich als Komponist entfalten, obwohl er mit politischen und persönlichen Rückschlägen zu kämpfen hatte. Er erlangte die Bewunderung von Schostakowitsch und wurde von den führenden sowjetischen Musikern der damaligen Zeit gefördert. Das gefühlvolle Cello Concertino mit seinen jiddischen Obertönen und seiner melodischen Eloquenz wurde erst posthum entdeckt und ist im Grunde eine Vorabversion des ausgefeilteren und intensiveren Cellokonzerts. Das kraftvolle romantische Konzert wurde zu einem der meistgespielten grossformatigen Stücke Weinbergs. Die Fantasia ist ein ansprechendes Frühwerk - ausdrucksstark und spontan. Yuri Medianik ist seit 2022 künstlerischer Leiter und Chefdirigent des Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra und als angesehener Dirigent und Multiinstrumentalist (Violine, Bajan, Bandoneon) bekannt. Auftritte vor den Präsidenten von 15 Ländern zählen zu seinen Erfolgen. Seit 2015 leitet er die Novaya Opera in Moskau und ist seit 2021 Chefdirigent des Staatlichen Akademischen Opern- und Balletttheaters Nischni Nowgorod. Der Cellist Nikolay Shugaev hat mit Orchestern wie dem Staatlichen Akademischen Sinfonieorchester St. Petersburg, dem Orchestra Simfonica Bucuresti, der Norrlandsoperan, der Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Academy und dem Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Cuba zusammengearbeitet und ist bei internationalen Festivals wie Ceresio Estate, Società dei Concerti di Milano und dem Lucerne Festival aufgetreten.

Nikolay Shugaev
leads an active performing career as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor, making major concert appearances throughout Europe, North and South America, and Asia. In the summer of 2024, he was awarded the President of Jury prize at the International Conductors' Competition in Bucharest.

During the 2023-2024 seasons, he serves as the Chief Conductor of the North Caucasian State Academic Philharmonic Orchestra named after V. I. Safonov. In 2024, along with the philharmonic orchestra, he was awarded with a special prize of the Russian Grand Orchestra Prize "440hz" for his performance of "The Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky.

In January 2024, he successfully toured China (Nanjing, Jiangsu Performing Arts Center), where Nikolai presented works by Russian and French composers in collaboration with the Jiangsu Province State Orchestra. In November 2024, he will represent Russia at the 28th International Ballet Festival "Alicia Alonso" in Cuba.

During the 2023/2024 seasons, he performed with orchestras such as the State Academic Orchestra of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Bucharest Symphony, Norrlands Opera (Umeå, Sweden), Dagestan State Philharmonic, the Academy of the Academy of Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Stockholm) and others. In the 2023/2024 season, in addition to numerous symphonic programs, he conducted several operas, including "Carmen," "The Queen of Spades," "Die Fledermaus," "Iolanta".

In January 2024, he recorded all of M. Weinberg's symphonic music for cello and orchestra with the Tyumen Symphony Orchestra conducted by Yuri Medyanik for Naxos.

Nikolay completed his master’s degree (cello) at Moscow State Conservatory with Professor Natalia Shakhovskaya and his soloist diploma at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano with Professor Enrico Dindo, his master’s studies in symphony and opera conducting at Luleå University (Sweden) with Petter Sundkvist and choir conducting with Erik Westerberg.

As a cellist, he regularly performs at international festivals such as Ceresio Estate, Società dei Concerti di Milano, Società del Quartetto, Lugano Festival, Rome Chamber Music Festival, Mantova Chamber Music Festival, Lucerne Festival, LAC Lugano, MiTo, Korsholm Festival, RUSK, and many others. Since 2017, he has been the deputy artistic director of the Habana Clásica festival in Cuba. Nikolay served as the solo cellist of Ensemble NEO (Sweden), one of the leading contemporary music ensembles in Europe. Moreover, Nikolay has recorded numerous CDs for labels Naxos and Gallo (Switzerland). His recording of Italian cello concertos "Malipiero, Casella, Ghedini" (Naxos 8.574393) with the Rostov Symphony and conductor Valentin Uryupin has been a highlight of the season, highly acclaimed by music critics. "Gramophone" writes: "Nikolay Shugaev is an eloquent soloist in all three works, and the Rostov Academic Symphony Orchestra provides sensitive support throughout under the direction of Valentin Uryupin. Strongly recommended, then, for Ghedini’s concerto; its unique atmosphere continues to haunt me."
