Info for "Je m'abandonne à vous" Songs on poems by Henriette de Coligny, Comtesse de La Suze

Henriette de Coligny, Comtesse de La Suze, was more than just a woman of letters admired in her time, even by the very demanding Boileau. It was as a free woman that she married for love; after the death of her husband, a second one was forced on her, but, still a free woman, she demanded to be ‘de-married’! Surrounded by expert musicians, Marc Mauillon shows us that her précieux poetic universe mixes tenderness with the most unexpected strokes of audacity, so much so that her verse inspired many composers of the Grand Siècle – and after!

Marc Mauillon
With the extent of his repertoire, his unique tone and his chiseled diction, Marc Mauillon occupies a very personal place on today’s lyrical scene. Sometimes a baritone, sometimes a tenor, this chameleon adapts his colors to the musics he performs as well as the characters he embodies.

On the opera stage, he can personify a «goofy» character (Papageno, Robinet from La Vie Parisienne, Mercurio from Orphée aux enfers, The monk of King Arthur by Shirley & Dino, The Husband from Mamelles de Tirésias by Poulenc, Momo from Orfeo by Rossi, Robert le Cochon by M.O. Dupin), an evil deity (Hatred in Armide by Lully, Tisiphone in Hippolyte et Aricie, Sorceress in Dido & Aeneas), a tragic actor (title roles of Egisto by Cavalli, Orfeo by Monteverdi, Pelléas by Debussy, Adonis by Blow, Pélée in Alcione by Marais…) and even a tragic actress (Raulito in Cachafaz by Strasnoy).

In concert, he sings some Airs de cour (Lambert, Charpentier, Bacilly…), French motets (Charpentier, Lully, Rameau, Desmarest, Campra, Couperin), Italian madrigals (Monteverdi, Gesualdo), sacred or secular cantatas (Bach, Haendel, Vivaldi, Telemann, Monteclair, Clérambault), as well as medieval or Renaissance music programs.

Since the beginning of his career, he has been working with conductors such as W. Christie (he is the laureate of the first Jardin des Voix in 2002), M. Minkowski, R. Pichon, C. Rousset, A. Altinoglu, J. Savall, V. Dumestre, H. Niquet, E. Haïm, L. Campellone, M. Pascal, G. Jourdain… and stage directors such as L. Hemleb, D. Warner, B. Lazar, I. Alexandre, R. Carsen, J. Mijnssen…

Recitals and chamber music are central in his career: he has performed Machaut with Pierre Hamon, Vivabiancaluna Biffi and Angélique Mauillon, Poulenc/Eluard with Guillaume Coppola, les musiciens de la Grande Guerre with Anne Le Bozec, Peri and Caccini with Angélique Mauillon. Recently, he sang the Leçons de Ténèbres by Lambert (released by Harmonia Mundi in 2018) with Myriam Rignol, Thibaut Roussel and Marouan Mankar-Bennis. In his programmes he has always reflected on the link between music, poetry and vocality. In 2016, he creates Songline, a monodic a capella recital,in which music, motion and light intertwine.

This season, he has embodied the four valets in Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Bordeaux, has collaborated with singer Lea Desandre at the Opéra Comique for a series of recitals, and has taken part in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Les Arts Florissants (London, Hamburg, Baden-Baden, Madrid and Paris). He has also performed in Copenhagen (Orfeo by Monteverdi), will perform at the Liceu in Barcelone (Alcione by Marin Marais in the role of Pelée) and will play Pelléas again in Montpellier. A new recording has also been released in early 2020 by Harmonia Mundi, around the work of Fauré with pianist Anne le Bozec.

Marc Mauillon has taught secular Medieval music interpretation at the Sorbonne (Masters of Ancient Music Interpretation) since 2018.

Angélique Mauillon
After beginning musical studies in her native city of Montbéliard, Angélique Mauillon moved to Lyon where she graduated from the Regional Conservatorium as a student of C. Truant, on modern harp. At the same time, she pursued parallel studies in musicology at the Lyon University. She then decided to specialize in historical instruments and joined the class of Eugène Ferré at the Lyon National Conservatorium. There, Angélique Mauillon received her degree in Early Music and Chamber Music in 2002, with the highest honours. She finished her studies with a postgraduate year at the Scuole Civiche di Milano, under Mara Galassi.

Covering a period from the 13th to the 18th centuries, her wide-ranging interests have led to collaboration with a number of major ensembles. She can be heard on mediaeval harp with Mala Punica, Alla Francesca, Tasto Solo, Canto Coronato or on renaissance harp with Doulce Memoire or Les Jardins de Courtoisie. As soloist or continuo player for baroque repertoire, she has participated in productions with Le Concert d’Astrée, La Fenice, La Rêveuse, Les Paladins, Il Seminario Musicale, etc…

She plays also with her brother, the baryton Marc Mauillon in the medieval project «Le Remède de Fortune» of Machault, and in a recital, «Histoires de famille», witch is about baroque italian music.

Teaching also forms an important part of her activities; Angélique Mauillon teaches historical harps at Tours Conservatory, and Lyon Conservatory.
