The magnificent Lebanese-Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury's debut recital album. Featuring Michael Spyres with Conductor Carlo Rizzi and The Hallé.

Opera Rara will release two discs of arias – titled Espoir & Écho - recorded with Michael Spyres and Joyce El-Khoury. Brought to life by the same singers in a one-off concert performance on Bastille Day – Friday 14 July - at London’s Cadogan Hall, the two discs feature a selection of mainly French arias made famous by two leading figures of the 19th century French and Italian operatic scene: Gilbert Duprez and Julie Dorus-Gras.

Marking the company’s return to producing artist collections, the two discs were recorded in February with the Hallé and Carlo Rizzi – both of whom will also perform on 14 July – and were curated by Opera Rara’s Repertoire Consultant Roger Parker. With the aim of introducing listeners to forgotten music written by well-known composers including Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi and Berlioz, as well as lesser-known names such as Auber, Halévy and Hérold, over half of the arias recorded were given their world premières by Duprez and Dorus-Gras. While released as solo discs, both Michael and Joyce will also duet on each other’s recordings.

Born in the Lebanon and brought up in Canada, Joyce El-Khoury studied in Ottawa and Philadelphia, before graduating from the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development programme. Today she is one of the brightest young stars in the opera world, recently receiving universal acclaim for her landmark performance of Violetta in La Traviata at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. As well as singing extensively in America, she appears widely in opera and concert throughout Europe, including the Bayerishe Staatsoper. She returns to Covent Garden in 2018, but before then will star in Glyndebourne and Madrid, as well as singing extensively in concert.

Joyce has starred in two Opera Rara recordings to date: Donizetti's Belisario and the award-winning recording of Les Martyrs. Joyce's album Écho features music associated with the great 19th century soprano Julie Dorus-Gras, including arias by Berlioz, Donizetti, Meyerbeer and Weber. She also duets with her co-star from Les Martyrs, Michael Spyres, whose own recital disc is also released in September 2017, and is available from Opera Rara exclusively from 14th July 2017.

Über Joyce El-Khourys Auftritt als Violetta (»La Traviata«) im Rahmen ihres Debüts am Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London 2017 schrieb The Independent: »Ihre Pianissimi sind erlesen, ihre Koloraturen sind gewagt und furcht- wie tadellos, und die Ausdruckskraft ihrer Stimme ergreift jedes Herz.« Ihr besonderes Talent für das italienische Belcanto-Repertoire demonstriert sie insbesondere auf ihrer kürzlich erschienenen Debüt-Soloalbum »Écho« mit The Hallé Orchestra unter der Leitung von Carlo Rizzi beim Label Opera Rara.

Nach ihrem umjubelten Debüt beim Glyndebourne Festival im August 2017 (ebenfalls als Violetta), eröffnete Joyce El-Khoury die Saison 2017/18 mit einer Gala-Vorstellung beim NDR Sinfonieorchester. Als Musetta in »La Bohème« kehrte sie unter Richard Jones nach Covent Garden zurück, eine Produktion, in der sie im Dezember am Teatro Real erneut zu erleben war. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gewann zudem ihr Rollendebüt als Imogene in Bellinis »Il Pirata«, die sie im Frühjahr auch am Theater St. Gallen sang. Es folgte ein Recital mit dem Philharmonischen Orchester Moskau. Im Sommer stand sie zudem in der selten gehörten Donizetti-Belcanto-Oper »L’ange de Nisida« erneut in Covent Garden auf der Bühne – eine Produktion, in deren Rahmen auch eine Neueinspielung des Werks bei Opera Rara entsteht. Joyce El-Khourys Diskographie umfasst zudem mit »Les Martyrs« und »Belisario« zwei weitere Donizetti-Raritäten unter der Leitung von Sir Mark Elder bei Opera Rara, die jeweils herausragende Kritiken erhielten.

Auch ihre Spielzeit 2016/17 war von bedeutenden Debüts geprägt: neben der Traviata an Covent Garden u.a. die Leila in Bizets »Les Pêcheurs de Perles« an der Opéra National de Bordeaux. Rollen- und Hausdebüts absolvierte sie zudem an der Opera Philadelphia als Liù in »Turandot« und als Salome in Massenets »Hérodiade« an der Washington Concert Opera. Weitere Engagements umfassten die Violetta an der Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Musetta an der Bayerischen Staatsoper München und die Partie der Tatyana Bakst in Jake Heggies neuer Oper »Great Scott« an der San Diego Opera. Lorbeeren erntete Joyce El-Khoury zudem mit der Partie der Maria Stuarda an der Seattle Opera, wo sie kurzfristig für eine erkrankte Kollegin einsprang.

Auf der Konzertbühne debütierte Joyce El-Khoury mit dem Orchestre de Paris unter Jesús López-Cobos in Rossinis »Stabat Mater«, in Österreich sang sie Konzerte mit Elena Garanca, in Spanien mit Juan Diego Flórez. Zu weiteren Höhepunkten ihrer Laufbahn zählen die Titelrolle in Dvoráks »Rusalka« im Concertgebouw Amsterdam, ihr Debüt an der Santa Fé Opera als Micaela in Bizets »Carmen«, ihr Debüt an der Korean National Opera als Violetta, Verdis »Requiem« beim Al Bustan Festival in Beirut sowie »La Bohème« und Beethovens »Missa Solemnis« mit den Münchener Philharmonikern.

Im Libanon geboren und in Kanada aufgewachsen, absolvierte Joyce El-Khoury ihren Bachelor of Music an der University of Ottawa. Ihr künstlerisches Diplom erhielt sie an der Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia; zudem ist sie Absolventin des Lindemann Young Artist Development Program der Metropolitan Opera. Sie gewann 1. Preise zahlreicher Gesangswettbewerbe und Stiftungen, darunter die Loren L. Zachary Competition, die Opera Index Competition, die George London Foundation und die Mario Lanza Vocal Competition.
